Il cuore dell’investimento è rappresentato dai Progetti di Ricerca Scientifica, che da soli assorbono 1.087.614,13 euro, distribuiti tra 89 progetti selezionati su 246 domande pervenute. Si tratta della somma più alta mai erogata per questa categoria, con un balzo del 31% rispetto al 2024, quando erano stati stanziati 826.574 euro. Per dare un’idea della portata dell’investimento, basti pensare che fino a pochi anni fa la media annua si aggirava sui 121.000 euro. L’altra grande area di intervento riguarda gli archivi dei movimenti politici e sindacali, finanziati in attuazione della Legge di Bilancio 2018. Per il 2025, sono stati approvati 47 progetti su 101 candidature, per un totale di 712.500 euro, ovvero il 100% del budget disponibile
Tra i criteri di valutazione, sono stati premiati in particolare i progetti tecnologicamente innovativi, con attenzione all’uso di intelligenza artificiale per la digitalizzazione massiva e all’interoperabilità con la nuova piattaforma ICAR. Ma non è mancato il sostegno anche al lavoro archivistico più tradizionale: recupero, restauro, riordino e inventariazione di fondi a rischio dispersione o in precarie condizioni di conservazione.
“L’incremento dei finanziamenti destinati alla ricerca scientifica e alla valorizzazione del patrimonio archivistico rappresenta una scelta strategica e un segnale di attenzione concreta verso la memoria documentale del nostro Paese. Con questo intervento, la Direzione generale Archivi intende rafforzare il sistema archivistico nazionale, promuovendo l’innovazione tecnologica, la qualità scientifica dei progetti e la salvaguardia dei fondi più fragili e a rischio dispersione. Si conferma così la centralità degli archivi non solo come luoghi di conservazione, ma come infrastrutture culturali fondamentali per la crescita civile e democratica della collettività”, ha dichiarato Antonio Tarasco, Direttore generale Archivi.

Archives: over 1.8 million euros invested in research, protection and historical memory in 2025
The General Directorate of Archives of the Ministry of Culture has made a record investment: €1,800,114.13 will be allocated in 2025 to scientific research and the enhancement of Italian archives, an increase of 14% compared to 2024. This is a strong and concrete signal in favour of the preservation of collective memory and the national documentary heritage. The Director-General, Antonio Tarasco, has signed the decrees releasing the funds, which will be distributed across two main areas: Scientific Research Projects and the Archives of Political and Trade Union Movements. A total of 136 projects will receive public funding in 2025, selected from 347 applications.
The core of the investment is represented by Scientific Research Projects, which alone account for €1,087,614.13, distributed among 89 projects selected from 246 applications received. This is the highest amount ever allocated to this category, representing a 31% increase compared to 2024, when €826,574 was allocated. To give an idea of the scale of the investment, it is worth noting that until a few years ago, the annual average was around €121,000. The other major area of intervention concerns the archives of political and trade union movements, financed under the 2018 Budget Law. For 2025, 47 projects out of 101 applications have been approved, for a total of €712,500, or 100% of the available budget.
Among the evaluation criteria, particular emphasis was placed on technologically innovative projects, with a focus on the use of artificial intelligence for mass digitisation and interoperability with the new ICAR platform. However, support was also given to more traditional archival work: recovery, restoration, reorganisation and inventorying of collections at risk of dispersion or in poor condition.
'The increase in funding for scientific research and the enhancement of archival heritage represents a strategic choice and a sign of concrete attention to our country's documentary memory. With this intervention, the General Directorate of Archives intends to strengthen the national archival system by promoting technological innovation, the scientific quality of projects and the preservation of the most fragile collections at risk of dispersion. This confirms the central role of archives not only as places of conservation, but also as cultural infrastructures that are fundamental to the civil and democratic growth of the community," said Antonio Tarasco, Director General of Archives.
