Il monaco, incaricato dal capo della Chiesa Copta d'Egitto, Papa Tawadros II, di allestire un laboratorio per il restauro e la conservazione dei manoscritti antichi disseminati nei molti monasteri copti d'Egitto presso il complesso monastico di Wadi El Natrun, nell'antica Scete, ha potuto osservare da vicino le complesse tecniche di intervento messe a punto nel laboratorio per il restauro di opere che rivestono grande importanza storica e culturale.
Tra i numerosi restauri eseguiti dal laboratorio, la cui attività di restauro, formazione e ricerca nel campo dei manufatti archivistici e librari rappresenta una vera eccellenza, vale la pena ricordare il Codice Norsa, una delle copie miniate della traduzione ebraica della Guida dei perplessi del medico e filosofo ebreo Mosheh ben Maimon, detto Maimonide; il “Codice sul volo degli uccelli” di Leonardo Da Vinci; il Libro Sacro, Sidra, uno dei più antichi manoscritti conservati nella Chiesa di Santa Maria Immacolata della Città di Qaraqosh, scampato all’occupazione dell’ISIS e riconsegnato nel marzo 2021 da Papa Francesco, in occasione della visita in Iraq, all’ Arcivescovo di Mosul.

Archives | Visit of Coptic Rev. Wessa Anba Beshoy to ICPAL restoration laboratories for ancient manuscript preservation
To strengthen the exchange of knowledge between Italian and Egyptian religious institutions in the field of restoration and preservation of ancient documents. This was the objective of Rev. Dr. Wessa Anba Beshoy's visit to the restoration laboratories of the Central Institute for the Pathology of Archives and Books (ICPAL), where he was welcomed by the Director General of Archives of the Ministry of Culture, Antonio Tarasco, the Director of the Institute, Aurora Raniolo, and the director of Service II of the General Directorate of Archives, Sabrina Mingarelli.
The monk, who was commissioned by the head of the Coptic Church of Egypt, Pope Tawadros II, to set up a laboratory for the restoration and preservation of ancient manuscripts scattered throughout Egypt's many Coptic monasteries at the Wadi El Natrun monastic complex in ancient Scete, was able to observe closely the complex intervention techniques developed in the laboratory for the restoration of works of great historical and cultural importance.
Among the numerous restorations carried out by the laboratory, whose restoration, training and research activities in the field of archival and book artifacts represent true excellence, it is worth mentioning the Codex Norsa, one of the illuminated copies of the Hebrew translation of the Guide to the Perplexed by the Jewish physician and philosopher Mosheh ben Maimon, known as Maimonides; Leonardo Da Vinci's “Codex on the Flight of Birds”; and the Holy Book, Sidra, one of the oldest manuscripts preserved in the Church of St. Mary Immaculate in the City of Qaraqosh, which escaped ISIS occupation and was handed back in March 2021 by Pope Francis, during his visit to Iraq, to the Archbishop of Mosul.
